Application Landscape Roadmapping

Many organizations have a complex range of applications providing multiple functions, typically a mix of legacy systems with newer platforms and an emerging collection driven by digital and analytics strategies. Apart from ongoing maintenance costs and the difficulties in aligning (and even understanding) interfaces between systems whenever any change takes place, there is often a growing need to define the role and value of the landscape and to communicate its structure to many stakeholders.

Consilium Blue offers a service to assemble an interactive roadmap that defines the evolution of current state applications to an agreed future state, through intermediate phases where applicable. Through in-depth consultation with application stakeholders, each transition step can encompass multiple factors - cost & return, information management & MDM issues, business impact at multiple levels, and a focus overall on simplifying and streamlining the landscape whilst optimizing its value to the organization.

A modeling / roadmapping toolset constructed by Consilium Blue is used in this exercise, with a future option for its continued use by customers on a subscription basis. The following diagram outlines the core concept and all areas in focus:

Key features of the service and associated roadmapping toolset are:

  • Components can be selected as in-scope or out-of-scope by a customer as part of the engagement process.
  • Information is typically sourced from existing application's user and technical documentation followed by in-depth interviews with application owners or equivalent.
  • Work may be conducted on-site or remotely via teleconference & videoconference, as per customer agreements.
  • Confidentiality of customer information is sacrosanct and all non-disclosure agreements will be strictly observed.
  • If business capability definitions have not been established, they can be assembled as part of the engagement if required.
  • There is considerable flexibility in adapting to a customer's sometime unique approach in defining cost & return, and other attributes such as information management.
  • Sample approaches & definitions will be provided during the engagement.
  • The output is a comprehensive roadmap with supporting documentation containing all input material, all transition step detail, and includes an interactive visual means to query the roadmap based on different profile perspectives.
  • Access to the toolset used during the engagement to make ongoing alterations to the roadmap will be available in the future on a monthly subscription basis if required. (The delivered roadmap does not require this toolset though.)
