Portfolio / Architecture Roadmapping
The alignment between business strategy, specific goals and the assembly of a portfolio of project and operational investments can be a very complex and difficult exercise. How best to prioritise and balance a portfolio of work to support different strategies, whilst achieving goals and enhancing capabilities?
Consilium Blue offers a service to help define the alignment between critical areas - strategy, goals, capabilities, programs & projects, cost & return, information management, solution architecture, and even roles & skillsets. The end result is a portfolio / architecture roadmap that allows insightful analysis across all areas, as well as the means to visualize how all areas are connected.
A modeling / roadmapping toolset constructed by Consilium Blue is used in this exercise, with a future option for its continued use by customers on a subscription basis. The following diagram outlines all areas in focus:

Key features of the service and associated roadmapping toolset are:
-
Components can be selected as in-scope or out-of-scope by a customer as part of the engagement process.
-
Information is typically sourced from existing planning documentation followed by in-depth interviews with key program/project stakeholders.
-
Work may be conducted on-site or remotely via teleconference & videoconference, as per customer agreements.
-
Confidentiality of customer information is sacrosanct and all non-disclosure agreements will be strictly observed.
-
If business capability definitions have not been established, they can be assembled as part of the engagement if required.
-
The articulation of business strategy can remain at a high level or can be divided into tiers of greater detail if required.
-
Problems, opportunities & goals should ideally be highly quantified, however they can remain at a top level if required.
-
The portfolio construction of linked programs & projects is not meant to mimic a detailed Gantt chart but rather only contain the necessary amount of information to generate high quality insights (and actions) from the analysis created.
-
There is considerable flexibility in adapting to a customer's sometime unique approach in defining cost & return, risk impact & likelihood, and other attributes such as information management and solution architecture.
-
Sample approaches & definitions will be provided during the engagement.
-
The output is a comprehensive roadmap with supporting documentation containing all input material, all analysis and insights generated, and includes an interactive visual means to explore the associations post-engagement.
-
Access to the toolset used during the engagement to make ongoing roadmap alterations will be available in the future on a monthly subscription basis if required. (The delivered roadmap does not require this toolset though.)
